Megafun was engaged by the Commonwealth Games (M2006) to conceive,
create and deliver a massive outdoor spectacle along the Yarra River to
coincide with the Opening Ceremony.
The event consisted of:
72 floating fish sculptures incorporating lighting, fountains and fireworks,
18 surf boats,
36 Couta boats,
30 other watercraft,
500 staff and volunteers.
It included fireworks from the tops of multiple city buildings, creating a city-wide display never before seen in Melbourne.
This live pageant
was a critical component of the ceremonial opening at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and was a
significant feature of the international broadcast going to approximately 1.5 billion
people.
A scaled down version of the fish show was presented every night of the Games.
The entire Yarra
Spectacle received wide critical acclaim, with Melbourne and
International media praising the use of the Yarra River and City as
part of the ceremony.
With a budget of $7 million, the entire project was overseen by Keith Tucker as Creative Produce and managed by Megafun staff.
Commonwealth Games
Festival Melbourne 2006
In
addition, Megafun provided the production management and technical
support to Arts Projects Australia for the Commonwealth Games’ Cultural
Festival.
This Festival
incorporated 3 outdoor stages, a circus big top, an outdoor aerial rig,
roving performances, regional live sites and key events at the Sidney
Myer Music bowl.
The Cultural Festival was the single biggest free outdoor cultural event the City of Melbourne has ever seen.
